Space Sector Specialist, UK Government, 85 days (Part time), Inside IR35

This is an exciting time to work with a Government Department at the heart of the UK's relationship with the global economy. The Department helps businesses export, drives inward and outward investment, negotiates market access and trade deals, and champions free trade.

Their work supports productivity and our economy, providing our businesses with access to new markets, and in turn new processes, technologies, and better supplies.

The Space Sector Team promotes UK space capability overseas to international customers and investors to grow UK prosperity and meet national requirements. They are the sector experts within the Department supporting decision making and delivery across the Department's full range of objectives, providing expertise and advice to senior officials and Ministers.

Space continues to increase in importance to the UK's economy and national security, with exports and inward investment playing a key role in this. With the establishment of the UK's new National Space Council, this is an exciting time to join the growing space community across the Government.

The Department has a key role in supporting the Prime Minister's commercial and international objectives for the sector, crucially helping to shape the National Space Strategy in the near future.

The role is needed to bring industry expertise and knowledge to the department as this sector grows and evolves rapidly and interacts with a complex series of stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working in the Space Sector Team in London and overseas officers in Europe, Gulf, and Indo-Pacific to create new export routes for UK supply chain.
  • Identify sector priorities, strengths and areas of focus, with supporting evidence, to outline a pipeline of export opportunities.
  • Map out stakeholders in the UK and work with the Space Growth Partnership, ADS and regional space clusters and hubs etc to focus on high value UK capability.
  • Work with headquarters and BEIS/UK Space Agency colleagues address success and inhibiting factors in ramping up UK space exports.
  • Introduce UK companies to specific requirements from stakeholders in Europe, the Gulf, and Indo-Pacific and support them on their exporting journey through B2B events and developing exporting best practices.
  • Develop sector knowledge within the sector team and upskill the team of civil servants.

To be successful in this role you will need to enjoy building relationships inside and outside government with a high degree of professionalism and credibility. You will bring energy, expertise and new perspectives to the team and be willing to share expertise and knowledge.

Essential Experience

  • Excellent, current, working knowledge of the UK space sector in an international context.
  • Expertise of UK capability in space competitive advantages in an international context.
  • Articulate communicator able to present and defend key messages.
  • Successful track record in business development within the space sector.
  • Driven and proactive approach to building relationships and delivering outcomes.
  • Willingness to travel to Europe, the Gulf, or Indo-Pacific as needed for the role.
